Dismemberment (2020)
Moving Image, 1’24”

Dismemberment (2020) investigated the manifestation of the oppressive internalized patriarchal thought in female photographers and models in private photography in a Chinese context. It is obtained from the conversation that inadvertently recorded when a female friend took private photos for me. The conversation was full of her evaluation on my figure as well as her guidance on my pose, which implied a hegemonic standard of attractiveness. I tried to deconstruct her language and took myself as a text code-converter for extracting key words. Then, I appropriated pictures and videos with the help of mainstream Chinese Internet search engine, and finally this video was combined in a complete one. The subtitles appeared in single word tried to mimic the “dismemberment” feeling that I felt as a model.
